Surati’s roots can be traced all the way back to Kampala, Uganda, where brothers Harilal and Maganlal Sheth founded the company in the early 1940’s. The Surati brand quickly became famous in it’s own right in East Africa, and one store turned into three. The business continued to expand until the 1970’s when the Asian expulsion forced the Sheth family to leave their home. As a result, Maganlal and his family eventually found their way to Canada in the 1980’s.
Maganlal soon found himself in the company of other families that shared a similar fate, many of which fondly remembered the distinctive taste of Surati. As a favour to their loyal customers, the Sheth family started to fulfil orders from their home kitchen. An overwhelming demand for Surati products led to the grand opening of their first retail location on Keele Street in Toronto, Ontario.
Continuing the family tradition, the next generation of the Sheth family; brothers, Mansukh, Yash and Haren, all took on individual roles within the company. Mansukh specialized in the production of the sweets and snacks, Yash managed all of the deliveries and also assisted in introducing products into the USA while Haren specialized in business development.
In 1985, having had great success at the Keele Street location, the family realized that they had outgrown this small space and sought to find a bigger facility. They discovered a perfect location at 26 Carnforth Road in Toronto, Ontario. Having ample space, the company was able to establish a state of the art facility that became the foundation to support the its growth and transition into a leading manufacturer and distributor of Indian foods.
Supporting our North American success was our Indian operation. With a factory producing snacks for the new ‘Shalini’ brand (named after Mansukh’s eldest daughter), we soared to new heights. By 2004, we expanded our Indian operation by building a new factory in Vadodara, India. This allowed us to vastly expand our product line and service our rapidly growing customer base.
Through positive customer feedback, a decision was made to expand into baked goods in 2008. Two new Bakery brands, Anmol and Golden, were introduced. Starting with a select range of biscuits and cakes, these brands now produce over 20 different products ranging from tea rusks to eggless pound cake.
Currently, we have nearly 200 employees worldwide as well as one of the most experienced leadership teams in the industry. We have won numerous awards for our operations in North America and India (Government of India MSME Best Quality 2010 – Surati India, Government of India MSME Entrepreneur of the Year 2010 – Surati India, 2005 North York Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year). A commitment to high quality products, outstanding customer service and adaptability to changing customer needs is attributed to our ongoing success. Each of these key success factors will continue to play a vital role in our future as we strive to become better everyday.
